  • The road back home

    Ron Warnick|Sep 12, 2018

Artists Doug and Sharon Quarles, known for dozens of murals they painted in Tucumcari since 2003, recently returned to town to stay after spending five years in southern Arizona. The couple announced on Facebook in mid-August they were moving back. They largely were responsible for Tucumcari officials describing their town as the "City of Murals" in the last 15 years. Last week, the Quarleses talked about their return over coffee and water at a local restaurant. "We know so many people here...

In a news release, Plateau stated it expected the deal to close by the end of the month. The news release also state...

  • Logan property tax rates to rise

    Ron Warnick|Sep 12, 2018

Residents of Logan will see hikes in their property tax bills while those in the House area will see a decrease after Quay County commissioners on Monday approved rates for 2018. Homeowners in Tucumcari will see a slight increase in their property taxes, while landowners in the Tucumcari area will see no change. Janie Hoffman, chief deputy of the county assessor’s office, said Logan property-tax rates will rise about 38 cents per $1,000 assessed value. She attributed the increase to a collapse in lot values for the lawsuit-embroiled Ute Lake Ra...

  • Debate nominees, but hearings waste of time

    Sep 12, 2018

It’s not hard to understand why Brett Kavanaugh would spend three long days submitting himself to the questions, pronouncements and self-aggrandizement of the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. For his trouble, he can expect a lifetime job on the highest court in the land. What’s hard to understand is why any of the rest of us would squander part of our allotted lifespans on this exercise. The opportunity to watch and hear the Supreme Court nominee speak for himself promises to be almost completely irrelevant to the outcome. The Dem...

  • Hansen: Even Bannon can teach us

    Sep 12, 2018

I would have kept Steve Bannon on my guest list anyway. Even if several others I had invited decided not to come because nasty old Steve was among the invitees, I would have kept him on the ticket had I been in the place of the New Yorker magazine folks who invited him, then disinvited him to a recent conference. Yeah, Bannon is a champion of the alt-right, which tends toward racism and some kind of cultural purity that derives from the time when racism was normal and even legislated, which, if you were among those of us born before 1965 or...

  • Prep football: Rattlers outfoxed

    Ron Warnick|Sep 12, 2018

FORT SUMNER — Defending Class 2A state champion Fort Sumner scored early and often and suffocated Tucumcari’s offense during a 55-0 decision Friday night that ended at halftime because of the mercy rule. After overwhelming their opponent the previous week, the Rattlers (1-2) were the ones who became overwhelmed. The defense of the Foxes (2-0) allowed just 59 yards of total offense and forced five turnovers. Fort Sumner, which has a cooperative agreement with House and has three players from tha...

The Lady Longhorns (6-1) defeated Grady/San Jon in the title game 25-7, 25-10, 25-16. Logan’s Jordan Hines was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, and three other Lady Longhorns -- Karli Webb, Kesleah Shields and Harlie Roach — were voted to the all-tournament team. The Longhorns totaled nearly 400 yards rushing and 30 first downs. Logan coach Chase Disney said cutting back on turnovers and making defensive adjustments were keys to the game. Instead of a two-man defensive front, Disney said his team used a three-man a...

  • ENMU can't recover from first-half hole

    Eric Murray|Sep 12, 2018

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico’s 2018 home football opener proved to be a mirror image of the previous week, as untimely penalties and a lack of execution cost the Greyhounds on Saturday night. The Hounds got themselves into a 31-0 hole by halftime, as a strong second half could not save them in a 34-21 defeat at the hands of 25th-ranked Colorado Mesa. “We just can’t get out of our own way,” ENMU coach Kelley Lee explained. “Penalties — we had two big plays called back. It ends up being a two-tou...

  • Runyan: In God's eyes, your value is indisputable

    Sep 12, 2018

In Genesis 1, we have the repeated statement that God found his creative work to be “good.” This can’t be a statement of moral rightness, since sin wasn’t even a thing yet. It can’t be a commentary on God’s own work, either, as if he was to say, “Wow, look what an awesome job I did on that!” The perfect God only does things the way he wants them done. Instead, we should understand that when God saw the creation was “good,” that’s meant as a statement of the value he placed on it. He judged it to be important. It was significant. Later, w...

  • Playing their hand

CLOVIS — More jobs, more revenue, prioritizing racing and “the nicest casino in New Mexico” were some of the projections of Full House Resorts’ pitch to Clovis Industrial Corporation members, Vision 2020 representatives and Clovis city officials during a presentation Wednesday at the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce. Officials from Full House, one of three groups looking to bring a racino to Clovis and one of five proposals statewide, answered questions from the community about a month before the state’s racing commission comes to...
