  • Making 'grate' strides

    Thomas Garcia, Staff writer|Dec 6, 2017

A warehouse expansion project and automation upgrade at Tucumcari Mountain Cheese Factory have increased the plant's daily production. Now it's looking for more business. "We wanted this expansion to secure the company's longevity in the community of Tucumcari," said Chuck Krause, co-owner of TMCF. Krause, along with his business partner Art Schaap, have been working on the expansion for five years. He said the new automated equipment has just been in operation since the second week of October....

Against all odds, a family has been reunited with its cat after she was lost in Tucumcari in July during a move from Washington, D.C., to Arizona. "It may be due to good fortune and the good nature of the residents of Tucumcari, but Salem is back with her family," said Wayland Labhart, of Prescott Valley, Arizona. Labhart said he was contacted on Thursday by Kathi McClelland, director of the Quay County Paws and Claws Animal Rescue Group, about his lost cat Salem. He said the family lost the cat...

A third-grade class has turned a social studies lesson about Puerto Rico into a humanitarian, relief project. "We felt bad about what happened to the people of Puerto Rico," said Issac Vargas, one of the students at Tucumcari Elementary. Issac said the class learned about the damage done by Hurricane Maria and the struggles the residents are still dealing with today. "It is some scary stuff," he said. Once the students learned about the impact Hurricane Maria had on the residents the students...

  • Letter to the Editor: GOP tax plan build for mega rich; no help for middle class

    Dec 6, 2017

In the business section of Sunday’s New York Times, there was an evaluation of the Republican “tax cut plan” that, according to President Trump, was going to hurt him and help the middle class. If the president had to carry all the money he saved to the bank it would probably hurt his back. The special tax clause that covers income on pass through entities was referred to as a “Donald J. Trump loophole” by Steven M. Rosenthal of the non partisan Tax Policy Center. Trump’s 2017 financial disclosure forms show more than 500 pass through ent...

  • Delaying tax issue costs NM jobs, income

    Albuquerque Journal|Dec 6, 2017

Legislative Democrats are champing at the bit to raise revenue, and one way to do it is to remove exemptions to the state’s dysfunctional and burdensome gross receipts tax system. Meanwhile, Republican Gov. Susana Martinez campaigned on a pledge of no tax increases and isn’t about to go back on her word to New Mexicans. But she would agree to remove some of those same exemptions if it is done in the context of a tax reform legislation. Rep. Jason Harper, R-Rio Rancho, is willing to once again pour his heart, soul and expertise into cra...

  • School bully not fit for president

    Steve Hansen, Columnist|Dec 6, 2017

I’ll lay my cards on the table: I do not like President Donald Trump. I would not like him as a Republican. I would not like him as a Democrat. Here’s why: Trump is the answer to what would happen if that opinionated guy down the street, who doesn’t know any more than I do, were to be elected president. Trump loyalists still think Trump should have some kind of immunity from what we used to call common courtesy and decency, because he’s showing them, by golly, just like they would. To me, we’ve elected a neighborhood blowhard, who used to b...

  • No way Hillary's getting into office

    Rube Render, Columnist|Dec 6, 2017

The latest Trump or former Trump associate to be indicted by independent prosecutor Robert Mueller is retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn. Depending on which news organization you choose to follow, Flynn’s guilty plea for lying to the FBI is either a bombshell or a nothing-burger. Never Trumpers in both parties and the media seem to believe that Flynn’s plea will be the beginning of the end of the Donald J. Trump presidency. In point of fact, Flynn lied about conversations he had with the Russian amb...

  • Lady Rattlers 'firing on all cylinders'

    Thomas Garcia, Staff writer|Dec 6, 2017

The Tucumcari Lady Rattlers are on a four-game win streak following Saturday’s championship win against Tularosa at the Lady Lions basketball tournament at Santa Rosa. “The team was firing on all cylinders during the championship game,” said Gary Hittson, Lady Rattlers head coach. The Lady Rattlers beat Tularosa 66-43. They advanced to the championship game by beating Estancia, 77-33, and Fort Sumner/House, 51-39. Hittson said the team played a strong game on both fronts against the Lady Wildcats. He said the team overcame some struggles from...

    Thomas Garcia, Staff writer|Dec 6, 2017

The Tucumcari Rattlers are scheduled to compete today in a district duals wrestling competition against West Las Vegas at the Snake Pit. “After our performance at Los Lunas, I am very excited about the season,” said Tucumcari coach Eddie Encinias. Encinias said the Rattlers placed sixth out of 13 at the Los Lunas duals. He said the team finished above Bernallilo, tied with Farmington and lost to Capital and Kurtland. “This was a great way to see where the guys were at mentally and physically,” Encinias said. “Even though many of the wrestlers...

  • Bible teaches how to preach

    Gordan Runyan, Religion columnist|Dec 6, 2017

Reading the book of Acts, two things occur to me. First, this is the only book in the Bible where we see Christian preachers actually preaching the Gospel. Second, when you pay attention to that preaching, it bears only slight resemblance to the Gospel we hear today. Many things that are preached, whether in our own churches, or by guest evangelists, or on television, simply do not appear in the preaching of Peter and Paul. I’m convinced those apostles would wrinkle their noses and wonder why w...

  • Advent, Lent for preparation to receive God

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Dec 6, 2017

Getting ready. That’s what Advent is about. At church we lit the first candle of Advent Sunday morning, and, as I write on this Sunday evening, I’m sitting in a quiet house, enfolded by the warm glow of the light from our Christmas tree. I didn’t grow up observing Advent or, for that matter, any of the other seasons of the “Christian calendar.” I was unaware that there was such a thing, and in our non- or anti-denomination denomination, there most certainly was not. I was blessed by “our” folks and still love them, but our bunch back then wasn...
