Rattlers claim win in home meet

The Tucumcari Rattlers finished first and the Logan Lady Longhorns placed second as teams had several area track and field athletes qualify for state on Saturday at the Rattler Relays in Tucumcari.

"It was a smaller field than we had last year but it was still a good turnout," said Wayne Ferguson, Tucumcari head track coach.

Ferguson said several schools had to cancel at the last minute due to various conflicts of schedules with other functions. He said the Rattlers boys team had a good outing, edging Santa Rosa by four points for first place overall.

"It's just our first outing of the season; there is still a lot of work to be done," Ferguson said.

The Rattlers' 400 meter relay team qualified for state with a time of 45.39. Xavier Garcia qualified in the javelin event with a throw of 165 feet 6 inches and Seth Martinez qualified in the 110-meter hurdles (15.68) and 300-meter hurdles (41.30).

Tucumcari's Sicelee Skinner qualified for state competition in the shot put event with a throw of 31-9.

The Lady Longhorns placed second overall behind Clayton with two relay teams and three individuals qualifying for state.

Brooke Valentine in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.75, Cassidy Cordova in the long jump (15-5) and Kambry Burns in the high jump (4-8). The 400 meter (52.43) and 800 meter (1:52.62) teams.

"We have several girls who have had little time to transition from basketball into track," said Robert Young, Logan head coach.

Logan will hold a track meet 3 p.m. Friday with several area teams scheduled to attend.
