• Gilbert Bonem of Tucumcari was honored at a retirement party held at the office of railroad agent B.D. Kersey. Kersey presented Bonem with a watch and $100 U.S. Savings bond for his service as a train clerk.

• The Tucumcari American Legion selected eight delegates from the Tucumcari High School to attend the Boys and Girls State committee’s of the American Legion Auxiliary. The students were: Janet Kelt, Betsy Hicks, Vickie Breen, Wanda Bush, Billy Cates, Butch Jaynes, Leonard Garcia and Ralph Ortega. The girls will attend the meeting at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and the boys will attend the meeting at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell. Kenneth Shiplet and Rita Fitzner of Logan were chosen as the Logan High School delegates to attend the state committees.

• Construction of the new Tucumcari telephone building got underway. The new phone system will connect Tucumcari with Las Vegas and Albuquerque initially and will be able to add new circuits in all directions in the future.
