Maxine Blitz Elliott

Maxine Blitz Elliott, 80, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, after a lengthy illness.
She was the daughter of Louis and Birdie Blitz.
She earned her BA and a Master’s Degree and was had a couple of hours left to receive a doctorate in library science. She was an English instructor at UNM, managed the family jewelry store, served as a Congressional aide and managed the branch library systems for Eastern New Mexico Regional and the El Paso Public Library. She was a 50+ member of Chapter D of the PEO Tucumcari and had been president of the AAUW.
She retired back to Tucumcari after managing several branch libraries in Phoenix.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Dunn’s Memorial Chapel followed by internment at Tucumcari Memorial Park.

William “Clyde” Battles

William “Clyde” Battles, 94, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Laurel Ridge Healthcare Center in Clovis following an illness.
The son of William J. Battles and the former Ena Bray, he was born April 29, 1909, in Little Rock, Ark. His family homesteaded 13 miles east of Santa Rosa, where he attended school.
The family moved to Hereford, Texas, in 1921, where they farmed at ranched. He married Emma Lestina Williams on Aug. 24, 1946, at Amherst, Texas, and the couple made their home in House in 1949.
He was a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by a daughter: Peggy Sue Tivis and husband, Danny, House, and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma “Cutie” Battles on March 3, 2000, a brother, Homer Battles on Sept. 2, 2002, and a sister, Hazel Dale in 1964.
Services were Tuesday morning in the House Baptist Church with the Rev. Sherman Martin officiating. Burial was to follow at the House Community Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Monty Tivis, Trevor Tivis, Kelly Miller, Ross Sinclair, Charles Franklin and Clifford Franklin.
Honorary pallbearers were Bob Franklin, Lloyd Morrow, Eldon Blackburn and Henry Jaramillo.
