Man dies when vehicle falls in canal

An 18-year-old Tucumcari man died Wednesday afternoon when the truck he was riding in fell into an irrigation canal north of Tucumcari.
Clinton Cox was in the passenger side of an older model International Scout driven by 18-year-old Brian Young of Logan, said New Mexico State Police Lt. Nathan Wallace.
Young lost control of the vehicle as he made a left-hand turn on one of the maintenance roads along the Arch Hurley irrigation canals, Wallace said.
The Scout swerved back and forth before the rear tires dropped off the canal, landing first on its passenger side, then its top inside the canal.
Cox was pinned underneath the vehicle.
The accident happened shortly before noon and Wallace estimated it took Young about 20 minutes to find help about three-quarters of a mile away.
Wallace said there were no indications of drugs or alcohol.
“From what we’ve been told, they’d been working on the vehicle,” Wallace said. “We could not find any indication that they were playing around.”
