The Rattlers have their final tuneup Friday against St. Michael’s before their quest for back-to-back championships officially begins.
The scrimmage against the defending AAA district champions will be held at Salvador Parez Park in Santa Fe beginning at 4:00 p.m. with the junior varsity.
Rattler’s head coach Dub Smith said this scrimmage will give the coaches a better assessment of the teams capabilities, with this being the first time his starting units will go full speed.
“This is going to be a great scrimmage for us because we need a wakeup call to let us know it’s not going to be a piece of cake every week,” Smith said.
The biggest difference between a AAA school and a AA school is depth, Smith said. He said the larger schools have replacement players that are nearly as good as the starters at many positions.
“If we get a key player hurt it hurts us twice,” Smith said. “It hurts our offense and our defense.”
Junior quarterback Chris McCasland spent much of last week’s Purple and Gold scrimmage running through the secondary. Offensively, he hopes Friday is no different.
“I want to run the option,” he said. “That is what they have me at quarterback for — to run.”
