Rattlers survive final scrimmage, avoid injury

By Ryan Lengerich

Senior running back Rob McCllelan rushed for a touchdown and Nick Weigal recovered a fumble for a touchdown but that wasn’t enough as the varsity Rattlers lost 3 touchdowns to 2 against defending district AAA champions Santa Fe St. Michael.

Defensive coordinator Wayne Ferguson said he was pleased with the scrimmage, and was impressed with how hard the Rattlers fought and were able to set up scoring chances.

Twice the Rattlers controlled the ball inside the 10-yard line only to come up empty. St. Michael scored two touchdowns on the final play of their set.

Wiegal returned a St. Michael botched snap 37 yards for a Rattlers touchdown. He said the team will settle in when they are in a true game situation, but he was encouraged with the teams performance.

“We look tough,” he said. “We need to get more aggressive, but not as many people were as scared as I thought they would be.”

Dub Smith said coming into the scrimmage that he wanted to see depth at the running back position. Friday night four rattlers carried the ball totaling 190 yards. Leading the way in the backfield was the senior McClelland who carried six times for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Junior Michael Baca rushed 10 times for 49 yards, Eric Holt carried nine times for 45 yards and Wiegal ran twice for 16 yards and hauled in one 37-yard reception.

Junior quarterback Chris McCasland got his first true test at quarterback and had only three passing attempts. He finished 1 for 3 amassing 37 yards on the completion. McCasland said he was not happy with his performance was weak when throwing on the run.

Weigal was not as tough on the first year quarterback.
“I have all the faith in the world in him,” he said.

No Rattlers were injured in the game. The junior varsity team won their scrimmage 3 touchdowns to 2.
