Marcella Jenkins, 85, died Sept. 2, 2003.
She was born Oct. 17, 1917 to Issiac Oren and Nellie Raye Etheridge Durham on a small ranch in Obar.
Mrs. Jenkins was the valedictorian of her senior class and after high school studied music at Eastern New Mexico University. At an early age, she and all of her family played musical instruments. Family members said the “Durham Family Orchestra” traveled much of the southwest playing for dances and various community gatherings Mrs. Jenkins and her first husband Joe Ballard operated a club at the Cactus Motor Lodge in Tucumcari. when she married her second husband, James Jenkins, they moved around on road construction jobs until they settled in Tucumcari, until the retired in Capitan. She was known by many people because of her musical talents and outgoing personality, family members said. As Mrs. Jenkins became more involved in her church she eventually focused her attention in community service, becoming the president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Family members said many will remember her great love for Bible study and witnessing.
Mrs. Jenkins is preceded in death by her parents, husband James Jenkins and one brother, Walter Royal Durham.
Survivors include three sons, Jim Jenkins and wife Paula of Cliff, Joe Jenkins and wife Marla of Roswell and Ted Jenkins of Portland, Oregon; two sisters, Bonnie White and husband Dave of San Diego, Calif. and Evelyn Durham of Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Service are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at LaGrone Funeral Chapel.
Burial will follow at the Capitan Cemetery.
Elder Wilburn Morrow of the 7th Day Adventist Church will officiate.
Pallbearers will be her three sons.
