Mesalands meets blood drive goal

Using the theme “Blood donors are heroes,” Mesalands Community College saw several heroes participate in their weekend blood drive.

“We are very pleased with the results, especially for a first-time drive at the College, said Dianne Griego of United Blood Services. “The surroundings, location and environment were perfect and our coordinator at the college, Melissa Shaffer did an excellent job.”

A goal of 46 units of blood was set at the start of the drive. 46 units were collected from 43 people and 31 units were whole blood and the remaining units were form donors opting for the double red cell apheresis process that allows donors to give two units instead of the usual one unit. Many of the donors were first time donors.

“We look forward to the time when we can do this in Tucumcari again,” Griego said.
