Penalties doom Mesalands in season’s first rodeo

QCS Reports

A field of more than 500 contestants from the region competed at the fall intercollegiate rodeo opener in Portales last weekend.

Among them were 38 members of the Mesalands Community College Rodeo Team.

“We had what I call ‘the first rodeo jitters’ that cost us in this first event,” coach Danny Garcia said. “Several penalties for breaking out too soon knocked down what would have been good times.”

Buck Nelson did manage an 11th place finish in bareback and Winston Jim also finished 11th in Bulldogging. Nelson competed in a field of 70 contestants and Jim competed against 45 others.

Garcia hopes the jitters won’t be as big a problem when the team goes to Alpine, Texas on Oct. 2-4.
