A Tucumcari man was killed on impact Saturday night when his car crashed into the home of two local residents, local police said.
Joseph Carlson, 71, was driving a tan Ford station wagon when he wrecked into the front wall of John and Lilly Mahill’s home at 1824 S. 5th St.
Tucumcari Police Sgt. Patti Lopez said Carlson died as a result of the impact from the crash. The cause of the incident is still under investigation, Lopez said.
The Mayhill’s, who had put up their Christmas lights earlier that day, weren’t home at the time of the incident.
“When we turned down Fifth Street on our way home I told my wife ‘let’s drive in front of the house and look at our lights.’ We saw lights all right — fire truck, ambulance and police car lights,” John said.
The Mayhill’s have large rocks decorating their front yard, which John said he believed were nothing more than a hassle until the wreck.
“Those rocks used to be a headache for me trying to keep the weeds out from around them,” John said. “But if that one large rock hadn’t have been where it was that car would have ended up in our living room.”
