The San Jon Lady Coyotes came into the Rattler Gymnasium on Friday evening with thoughts of taking down the Lady Rattlers, and when the dust had settled, take them down they did 60-44.
Early on it looked as if it would be a decision in Tucumcari’s favor as the Lady Rattler’s jumped out to a solid seven-point lead over their opponents, but the Lady Coyotes, little by little, scrambled back getting slowly, but surly, back in the game.
“We started slow,” said San Jon coach Clair Rachor. “We were just a little flat. It took a little bit to get set.”
But get set they did as they cut the Tucumcari lead down to two at 12-10 by the end of the first quarter and stepped into the lead 22-17 by half time.
Jessie Barns led all scorers in the game with 19-points for San Jon. Nocol Martinez added 17 and April Pollen was the third Lady Coyote to score in double figures with 16-points.
However, the Lady Rattlers were not about to let the Lady Coyotes walk away with the contest, and twice in the third period the young Tucumcari team scrambled back to retake the lead. The Lady Rattlers have only one senior on the roster.
But the hard pressing San Jon Squad were not to be denied a victory as they maintained the full-court press on the Rattlers and eventually stretched the lead to an unreachable goal for the Lady Rattlers.
Tucumcari was led by Jamie Jones with 13-points and Whitney Spinks added 12. Amanda Tapia dropped in 10-points.
“I was impressed with our girls,” said Tucumcari coach Alicia Trujillo, “They showed me a great deal. I’ve got to say, the more they play, the better they are getting. You’ve got to remember this was a group of girls that had no starters from last year. This experience has been good for them.”
