During the second December meeting of the Tucumcari City Commission, Mayor Calvin L. Litchfield has officially proclaimed that Monday, Jan. 19 will be declared Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the City of Tucumcari.
“I urge all citizens to join me in the celebration thereof and to take this opportunity to reflect upon Dr. King’s message of the principles of justice and equality for all peoples, and pursuing the ideal of the spirit of one America,” said Litchfield. “I further urge all citizens to follow Dr. King’s mission of service to others by celebrating Jan. 19 with a day on, not a day off, using that day to collaborate on projects that will benefit their community.”
Litchfield said there were a number of reasons for forming the decision to make the proclamation. He said entering into the picture were King’s philosophies and works that led America.
The mayor listed King’s belief in a person’s worth not being measured by his or her color, culture or class; his dream of racial equality and his service to others as just three of the reasons that the residents of Tucumcari should salute King on Jan. 19 and do special projects that will improve the community.
