The ballots have been counted and Tucumcari has a number of players on the 2003 New Mexico AA All-State Teams.
Seven Tucumcari High School Rattlers made the first teams’ lists, two more made the state’s second teams’ lists and an additional two were listed as All-State Honorable Mention.
“I am very proud of all of these young men,” said Tucumcari football coach Dub Smith. “They worked very hard for this honor.”
On the first team offensive squad were: senior A.J. Melinas as a guard; senior Joe Cisneros as an offensive tackle; and sophomore Eric Holt as a running back.
On the defensive side of the line, listed as All-State players were: junior Nick Wiegel at defensive end; senior Joe Cisneros as defensive tackle; and junior Chris McCasland as a player in the defensive secondary.
McCasland was also listed as the All-State AA punter for 2003.
Listed to the second team all-state squad are defensive end Nick Wiegel and A.J. Molinas as kicker.
Receiving the honorable mention nod was A.J. Molinas as a defensive down lineman and Able Vargas as an offensive guard.
“We’re all real pleased,” said Smith about the large number being named to the All-state rosters. “It not only indicates a high quality of individuals, but also it reflects extremely well on our whole program. “I always say ‘If you can be a team player, the individual honors will take care of them selves,’ and I think this reflects that very well,” said Smith.
