The Tucumcari Rattler Football Team landed five players on the “North squad” of New Mexico’s All-Senior All-Star Football Team.
Named to the all-senior squad on offense were guard A.J. Molinas, tackle Joe Sisneros, and Running back Rob McLelland.
Named to the defensive squad were defensive-end Abel Vargas and defensive back Andy Lan.
The announcement as to who would be selected to the teams was made early this week by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.
“This is a great honor,” said Tucumcari High School head football coach John “Dub” Smith about his players being named to the North half of the all-senior list, “but it’s one I think they have earned. They’ve all worked hard to be recognized in this way.”
By being chosen, the five Tucumcari football players are now eligible to play in the 14th annual North vs. South A/AA All-Star football game to be held June 12 in Silver City in the southwest corner of the state. The North/South contests are the only all-star football games sanctioned by the NMHSCA
The teams were selected by a committee of head football coaches in each sectin of New Mexico representing each class, A and AA district.
Last year’s game was also played in Silver City and it was won by the North 13-6.
“I think we are very well represented by this group of young men,” said Smith.
Other schools providing at least one representative from the North in A and AA will be Santa Rosa, Ft Sumner, Springer, Questa, McCurdy, Clayton, Ramah, Crownpoint, Escalante and Newcomb.Representing the South will be players from Lordsburg, Tularosa, Loving, Texico, Menaul, Captan, Dexter, Estancia, Hatch Valley, Laguna-Acoma and Jal.
