The Tucumcari Lady Rattlers fell 60-21 Friday to a more experienced Santa Rosa team. Santa Rosa was leading when Whitney Spinks kept her team in the game early by scoring Tucumcari’s first two baskets, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Santa Rosa’s three point shooting. Still, Tucumcari was only down by nine at the end of the first quarter.
Tucumcari couldn’t find the basket while Santa Rosa steadily improved during the second quarter. The Lady Rattlers managed just eight points in the second period while Santa Rosa scored twenty-two.
A number of Santa Rosa baskets came off the fast break after Tucumcari turnovers. Sadly for Tucumcari, that trend continued throughout the game. By the second half, Santa Rosa was up 37-14. Tucumcari opened the second half by turning the ball over. Santa Rosa took advantage and never looked back as they went up 53-18 by the end of the third quarter. Despite the Santa Rosa onslaught, Jamie Jones made some strong defensive plays for Tucumcari. She stole the ball under the basket and then muscled her way for a rebound in heavy traffic on Santa Rosa’s next possession.
Jennifer Maestas scored Tucumcari’s only two pointer in the fourth quarter. However, Tucumcari held Santa Rosa to seven points in the final period. Rattlers’ Head Coach Alicia Trujillo knew before the game what her team was up against.
“We are going to have to play tough”, she said.
Although disappointed after the game, Coach Trujillo was to the point. “We are young and inexperienced. Santa Rosa is number one in the state”
Trujillo said one of her team’s primary tasks is to put together a solid eight minute quarter.
“We are going to have to start stepping up.”
