The Tucumcari Girls’ Varsity played a solid first half according to head coach Alicia Trujillo, but Clayton surged in the second half to hand the Lady Rattlers a 63-39 loss Friday evening.
Lady Rattlers’ Head Coach Trujillo said turnovers led to Tucumcari’s faltering in the second half.
“It was the difference in the game, “ said Trujillo.
The two teams played fairly evenly in the opening quarter. When Tucumcari made mistakes, Clayton made mistakes also. Clayton held a slight edge, 12-8 at the end of the first period.
The story of the second quarter was different, however. It was free throws. Tucumcari’s Amber Martin was fouled on a three-point attempt and sank two of three foul shots.
With two minutes left in the half, Erin Kirksey sank two free throws in a row. Kirksey wound up perfect from the line, four out of four by game’s end. Jennifer Maestas hit two more free throws with a minute before halftime.
Tucumcari was only down by four, 23-19 at the half.
The Jackettes began to pull away in the third period, increasing their lead from four to 15. Tucumcari began to tire, yet still had hope.
The fourth quarter was rough on the Rattlers. Beginning with a little over six minutes left in the game, the Tucumcari girls went almost five minutes without a basket. Jamie Jones finally scored with a minute and a half to go.
Clayton made things worse with a three pointer in the final seconds. Coach Trujillo said she was pleased with the Rattlers’ first half play. “If we could play every half like that one, we’d be a pretty good team,” she said.
