On Saturday the Rattler wrestling squad traveled to Las Vegas to take part in the Cardinal Classic Invitational Wrestling Tournament at which head wrestling Coach Ernie Encinias reported they “fared well”. Encinias said it was an especially rough contest since so many large schools take part every year. Encinias said there were schools ranging all the way from the 5A classification taking part.
“Overall,” said Encinias, “I felt real good about our performances. My expectations for our wrestlers came true especially for Michael (Baca) and Justin (Garcia).”
Both Baca, Garcia and Herman Lopez finished in fifth place at the tournament going 6-2 for the day. Encinias said Lopez just returned to the team and promises to be a “great asset” to the team.
Brian Lopez finished in sixth place at the tournament. Wesley Martinez who went 3-2 finished in eighth place.
Other Rattler wrestlers taking part at the Las Vegas tournament were Josh Hauhn, Fernando Ureste and Nathan Martinez.
Rattler wrestlers will next travel to District competition in Las Vegas Saturday Feb. 14. For those who qualify, State competition begins on Feb. 19.
