LOGAN – Logan’s girl’s basketball team beat their Mosquero counterparts Thursday evening 29-26, but it was not an easy win for the Longhorn girls as the game came down to the final seconds of play, before the outcome was decided.
It should be granted that at no time in the entire game did the Lady Longhorns trail the Pirates, but on a number of occasions, the Mosquero squad was within two points .
“They’re a tough team,” said Longhorn coach Bridget Rea. “They play tough defense. They work long and hard on their defense.”
In the first quarter of play, the Logan squad clearly dominated the Mosquero squad, but as the first became the second the Mosquero girls found some of their three-point shooting skills and drew within two as the first half ended.
Rea said because of illness and an injury she was going with a younger than usual squad on the court against the Pirates and that could have been part of the reason for her girls letting the Mosquero players back into Thursday evening’s game.
“They (her players) weren’t used to it. That might have been the reason,” said Rea.
It was clear in the early minutes of the second half the Mosquero girls would not begin the third quarter as they began the first. In fact, for the rest of the game, they battled back every every time the Longhorn girls put them in a hole.
It was not until the final seconds of the contest that Longhorn fans could feel any security in the win.
