Girls fall to Texico

William Thompson

The Tucumcari girls’ varsity played Texico a little closer this time around but couldn’t overcome Texico’s three-point shooting as the Lady Wolverines went home with a 59-32 victory on Senior Night. Lady Rattler coach Alicia Trujillo was pleased with Tucumcari’s first quarter performance.

“We played a great first quarter,” she said. “That shows our team is capable of improvement even this late in the season.”

Tucumcari played a patient game early on. The Lady Rattlers passed the ball only when teammates were open. Rattler defenders were helping out on the defensive end, hauling in rebounds. By controlling the clock, Tucumcari managed a 6-5 lead midway through the opening period.
A Texico player hit a three-pointer, however, to send the Lady Wolverines up for good. Tucumcari stayed close in the first quarter, trailing only 13-9 by the start of the second period.
Texico hit a couple of threes early in the second quarter, and Tucumcari began to panic a little. The Lady Rattlers took unnecessary risks with the basketball, hurrying when they could have used a little more patience. Although Jamie Jones scored eight points in the first half, Texico went on an 8-0 run capped by a three pointer as they went up by 22 at the half, 38-16. Tucumcari played the Lady Wolverines evenly in the third quarter, but playing a team evenly after they are already up by 22 will not win the basketball game. Each team scored eleven points in the third period.
Early in the fourth quarter, Erin Kirksey hit a basket to pull Tucumcari within 19, 49-30. The Rattler defenders were hustling, trying hard to get in good position to stop Texico’s offensive plays, but Texico’s shooters were hitting their shots. Texico went on a 10-2 run to win the game. Jamie Jones scored Tucumcari’s final basket at home this season with two minutes left in the game. Coach Trujillo said she was proud of this year’s departing seniors.

“Josette Rey, Erin Kirksey, Amber Martin, those girls went through a lot, said Trujillo. “They had to adapt to a totally new system this year.”

Trujillo was confident that next year will be a different story for Lady Rattler fans.

“We’re losing just three out of 25 players on our JV and varsity teams,” said Trujillo. The Texico coach used a full court press on us tonight with one minute left in the game. Our girls will remember that next year. What goes around comes around.”
