Tucumcari High School wrestlers placed well in the district tournament, but did not place as well as expected in the recent state tournament, according to Coach Eddie Encinias.
“Michael Baca finished fourth in the state tournament which began Feb. 19,” said Encinias. “John Sewell placed sixth, but other than that no one else on our team won a medal.”
Encinias had high hopes heading into the state tournament because a number of Tucumcari wrestlers fared well in the district tournament.
“Michael Baca and Justin Garcia both finished first in the district tournament. Brian Lopez was a runner-up,” said Encinias. “Those guys did what they were expected to do.”
Four wrestlers received third place medals in the district tournament, Wesley Martinez, Jacob Otero, John Sewell, and Fernando Ureste. Josh Hauhn and Joseph Hurley both finished fourth. Encinias said next year should be kind to the Rattler wrestling team.
“We return all these wrestlers next year,” said Encinias. “We’ll be fully loaded and ready to go.”
