The Des Moines Demons let Logan get a little close, but poured in 29 points in the final period to end the Longhorns’ season Friday night in Springer.

Des Moines plays Springer Saturday night for a chance to advance to the state tournament. The Logan Longhorns were in the game early despite a Des Moines full court press that forced early turnovers. Drew Perez, Kirk James and Wes James hit Longhorn buckets, but Demon Jess Price hit a couple of threes as the Demons led 27-16 at the end of the first quarter.

Each team scored 15 points apiece in the second quarter. Despite the Longhorns’ size advantage, the Des Moines players out rebounded Logan. The Demons had many more scoring opportunities due to two or three offensive rebounds each trip down the court. Des Moines almost pulled away, but the Longhorns made some baskets late in the first half to keep the game somewhat close.

Des Moines was up at the half, 42-31.Des Moines high scorer Ben Doherty started finding net in the third quarter. Tucumcari fans may remember that Doherty put up 21 on the Rattlers recently. Doherty finished with 29 points against Logan, and Jess Price, the other Demon scoring threat, kept hitting shots as well.

Logan managed 15 points in the third quarter. Kirk Burns hit some baskets inside for the Longhorns and Drew Perez hit free throws, but Des Moines was up 63-46 heading into the fourth quarter. Perez hit most of the Longhorn buckets in the final period, but his points were not enough to combat the double threat of Doherty and Price. Doherty continued to hit shots and Price went on a tear, scoring 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Kirk Burns hit a three for Logan midway through the fourth quarter. At that point, the Longhorns were down by 13, and still in the game. Price then hit two in a row for Des Moines and Kenny Martinez sank a three to bury the Longhorn hopes.

The Longhorns scored only three points in the final four minutes. The subs were in the game for both teams the final two minutes of play. Des Moines advanced, 92-61.
Logan gave it a good run. The Longhorns beat an undefeated Grady team to get their shot at Des Moines. The Demons’ relentlessness and ability to stay quick on their feet down the stretch proved too much for Logan.
