Rehearsals are well underway for Tucumcari High School’s spring production of “Someone Save My Baby Ruth” or (“Foil the Villain”) under the direction of drama instructor Peggy Szaloy.
Szaloy said the play is a melodrama which takes place in Boston in the late 1800s with most of the action going on in two sweet shops in the downtown area.
“It’s a fun play,” said Szaloy about the play which will be performed March 18 at the Tucumcari High School Auditorium, “and the kids really seem to enjoy it, too.”
Cast members say they do indeed find the show entertaining.
“I love it,” said Autumn Moore who is playing the part of Toffee in the show. “I think it is so funny.”
James Seymour who is playing the villain in the melodrama said he is also enjoying the rehearsals and is looking forward to the actual production.
“I think the play is very, very funny and has a lot of cute parts in it,” said Seymour, “and I think the people who come and see it are really going to like it.”
Szaloy said that a production like “Someone Save My Baby Ruth” can really be improved when the cast and crew find the show entertaining. “So we seem well on our way with this one,” said Szaloy about the upcoming show. “I really think the audience is going to like this.”
The drama instructor and director said the show has “all the aspects that make up a good old-fashioned Melodrama.”
She said there is the sweet heroine, the plucky hero, the evil villain and even a villainess.
Another fun aspect Szaloy pointed to is that like most melodramas the villain talks directly to the audience and the audience is expected to cheer, boo and hiss at appropriate times.
The production which features an 11 person cast will be at 7 p.m. on March 18 and tickets will be $3.
