Steer Wrestling was where much of the excitement took place at the Weatherford, Texas Intercollegiate Rodeo held over the weekend. Steer wrestlers from Mesalands pulled down second and third place in the short round in that event.
Taking second in the short round was Matthew Antone who also took third place in the average. Chance Pope walked away with third in the short round and took fifth in the average.
The Mesaland team had high hopes that Cody Kersey would end up in winning numbers when he tied for sixth, seventh, and eigth place in the bareback long round where the field of competitors was 45 competitors, but Kersey found himself bucked off in the short round.
Mesalands saddle bronc rider Chance Towner placed seventh in the long round against 36 competitors, but suffered the same fate as Kersey in the short round.
Team roping is always a popular event with 125 teams entered at the Weatherford competition.
Out of the 125 teams, Mesalands ropers Domingo Mendoza and Eric Mascarenas split seventh and eighth place in the long round. A miss in the short round put them out of the running.
“I’m pretty proud of our showing,” said Mesalands Rodeo Coach Danny Garcia. “We could have done much better except we had several break the barriers.”
Next rodeo for the Mesalands Team will be in Odessa, Texas on March 25-27.
