According to the members of the staff of KNME Television, the educational television station in Albuquerque, Tucumcari will have a featured role in their next cultural affairs series, “Colors.”

The program featuring Tucumcari titled “Route 66: The Neon Road in New Mexico” will be broadcast Saturday, March 20. It will be available to all those who receive the Albuquerque Public Broadcasting station which is probably not most viewers in Tucumcari.

According to Evy Todd of KNME, featured prominently in the television program about restoring neon signs to the area along what used to be Route 66, will be a number of different businesses along Tucumcari Blvd, which use neon signs to advertise their businesses such as La Cita Restaurant and Paradise Motel.

However, featured in detail will be Teepee Curios of Tucumcari and its owner Mike Callens who was interviewed extensively for the program.

“I’m very honored to have been chosen for this,” said Callens about his shop and being portrayed in such a prominent position in the documentary television program about the lighting of the “Mother Road”.

Callens said he has been waiting quite a while for the unveiling of the television program since the photo journalist who shot it kept coming back to Tucumcari and getting more footage of both Callens and his store.

“We’ve been waiting for it for a long time,” said Callens, “and now it’s here. We’re excited to see his (the photo journalist’s) work. He kept coming back time and again and kept us energized.”

Callens said the cameraman shot “hours and hours” of film that will never be used. “Actually, I would love to see the out-takes on some of those,” said Callens.

The Tee Pee Curios owner said that while most of the people in Tucumcari will have to wait to see the program about the neon lights along Route 66, he will be in Albuquerque on Saturday to see the premier of the program.

“They’re making me go,” said Callens. “I tried to get out of it, but I can’t.”

Todd said while most of Tucumcari will not be able to see the program on Saturday, she is taking care that video tapes are being made which will be made available in Tucumcari.
