Tracksters do well in Dexter

Tucumcari High School thinclads traveled to Dexter on Friday to compete in the Demon Relays in Dexter and according to head track coach Wayne Fergerson, his track and field people did well, all things considered.

“Well, it’s spring break and we have some people gone and injured, but overall, I’d say we did pretty well when you take that into account,” said Ferguson.

Illustrating how well some did, Ferguson pointed to Nemi Sandoval who took first in the meet’s long jump with a jump of 19.6 feet and second in the meet’s triple jump with a jump of 41 feet 2 1/4 inches and by so doing cleared a distance sufficient to qualify him for state competition in May. He also said that on the girls’ side Tucumcari athlete Jami Jones came very close to qualifying for state in javelin.

“I was very impressed with her,” said Ferguson.

The head coach said that, in fact, he was very impressed with the entire girls’ team. He said that despite their youth and relative inexperience they showed a great deal of “poise” and “maturity” that will bring them a great deal of recognition in the not too distant future, probably before the season is over. Ferguson said that probably the Tucumcari boys will be making their mark even sooner.

“I think you will be seeing some very good things in the sprints and relays as soon as we have them all back and healthy,” said Ferguson. “That should be at Fort Sumner (March 30).”
