Tucumcari vs. San Jon
The Tucumcari varsity baseball team was not kind to its I-40 rival, San Jon, Saturday. The Rattlers won 26-13, and are becoming known as a solid hitting team.
Rattler Matt Garcia, relatively quiet with the bat until Saturday’s game, hit a 2 RBI single in the first inning to show that the entire Rattler batting order was capable of inflicting damage.
Rattler coach Mike Russell said he likes having a number of offensive weapons up and down the batting order.
“We’re getting hitting from other guys in the lineup, “ said Russell. “Matt Garcia was putting the bat on the ball today.”
A.J. Molinas, already known as a scoring threat by other teams, blasted a three-run homer in the second inning. That blast put the Rattlers up 8-0.
Matt Garcia drove in two more runs in the third inning as the Rattlers pulled away 10-2.
San Jon got as close as two runs during the game, but Tucumcari went on a tear in the fifth inning. With bases loaded, Dustin Russell hit a 2 RBI double, and Tim Roybal topped that with a 3 RBI double later in the inning. The Rattlers led 20-10.
San Jon managed three more runs, but Tucumcari had the game in the bag. Drew White pitched the last inning for Tucumcari. He struck out the final batter.

Tucumcari vs. Clayton
The Rattlers lost 9-8 to the Clayton Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon. Rattler Coach Mike Russell said the outcome should not fool anyone.
“We felt like we dominated this game,” said Russell. “We had more hits than Clayton and A.J. Molinas was walked most of the game.”
Molinas hit a home run in the third inning, but did not get a chance to hit again.
Coach Russell said he was not fond of the Clayton coach’s decision.
“Today it worked for Clayton, because every time A.J. got on base, we couldn’t bring him home,” said Russell.
The Rattlers were tied with Clayton, 8-8 after the top of the fifth inning. Matt Garcia, Matt Braziel and Drew White each drove in runs during the inning. Clayton, however, managed one run in the bottom of the fifth inning, and except for a Tim Roybal single, the Rattlers did not get any hits the rest of the game.
