College rodeoers succeed in Odessa

Mesalands Community College steer wrestlers Justin Price and Winston Jim finished in ninth and 10th place respectively in the long round at the Odessa, Texas Intercollegiate Rodeo last weekend.

Chance Pope came close with a 13th place finish in the long round. Price and Jim went on to split the sixth and seventh places in the short round and split seventh and eighth in the average. The field of steer wrestlers at Odessa was 51 competitors. Breakaway ropers Kelly Spears and Genie Noel finished the long round with scores of 11th and 12th out of 96 competitors. Other close long round scores included 12th place out of 110 ropers for Justin Price in calf roping, 12th place for Chance Towner and 14th place for Matthew Antone out of 44 saddle bronc riders, 15th place for Kelly Spears and 21st place for Melissa Campbell out of 100 barrel racers, and Ty Culberson and Jeff Robertson earned 15th place out of 115 team ropers.

“Overall we had a pretty good weekend, I’m proud of how much our team has improved,” said Mesalands Rodeo Coach Danny Garcia.

The Mesalands Rodeo Team are competing in Snyder, Texas this weekend.
