Shrimp boil raises $11,400

Preliminary numbers show the net proceeds for the Fifth Annual Mesalands Community College Shrimp Boil Scholarship Fundraiser to be about $11,400, a 7% increase over last year’s event.

A popular part of the event is the raffle of a chance for a cruise to Burmuda. This year the raffle and the auction of a king cake earned $4,367. The cake is a New Orleans Mardi Gras tradition and was donated by Vic and Andi Baum and purchased by Grant Morper. The winner of the Burmuda trip was Carol Arias.

According to Mesalands Community College Spokesman John Yearout, an ample Cajun style shrimp dinner with corn, potatoes, onions, sausage, bread and cake was enjoyed by a record, sold-out crowd of 176 people.

During the event, one of this year’s scholarship recipients, Donna Garcia, addressed the group to express her gratitude for the scholarship she has received and told how events like the Shrimp Boil, the Hispanic Scholarship Fundraiser and the Rodeo Scholarship Fundraiser provide valuable assistance to students studying at Mesalands Community College.
