Golfers struggle

The Tucumcari varsity golf team scored a 330 in a tournament at Portales, Monday. Their target score for the Portales tournament was 322. The Rattler golfers now have only four more tournaments to equal or better their target score.

The Rattlers need to match their target score two more times to make it to the state tournament as a team.
Coach Charlie Maciel said his golfers were bothered by the weather and the terrain of the Portales course.

“It was cold and windy,” said Maciel. “The course was wide open, flat terrain, and the greens were small.” Despite the dismal golfing conditions, Larry Roybal scored a 79 for the tournament, and Nick Wiegel improved to an 83. Tucumcari as a team finished fourth in a field of seven.

Other golfers improved on scores from the previous tournament at Ruidoso. Matt Smith scored an 84 and Aaron Peacock scored a 94. Peacock is one of the golfers that figured to be at or near the top for the Rattlers this season, but has struggled of late.

Coach Maciel said Peacock will come around and Roybal has become a leader for the team. “Aaron Peacock is not necessarily playing badly, he is just struggling,” said Maciel. “He gave it a good shot and just couldn’t get it done. Larry Roybal has taken on a leader’s role. He has worked hard on his game. He was just 6 or 7 strokes off the winner in Portales.”

The Rattler golfers travel to Guymon for a tournament, Friday.
