A century ago, the First Baptist Church of Tucumcari began and during the last five months in Tucumcari the most modern edition of that church has been celebrating those 100 years of existence.

On Sunday, the church took part in the last part of that celebration which included not only the regular services but a dinner following the services. To help with the celebration, in addition to regular pastor Benny Hipps and associate pastor David England, the First Baptist Church brought in Executive Director of the Baptist Convention of New Mexico Claude Cone.

Following a history of the church presented by Debra Whittington and prayers, songs and the offering Cone talked about the doors that open when religious people are faced with decisions. “It is always a pleasure when Dr. Come comes,” said pastor Benny Hipps. “He’s always a blessing to the church. I felt it went very well.”

Cone said on his part, he was very happy to come to Tucumcari to speak. “I am always happy to come to Tucumcari,” said the Dalhart, Texas born minister. “I am especially pleased to be here to help them celebrate 100 years of worshiping the Lord and to challenge them for the future.”

According to Hipps, Sunday’s service with Cone and dinner are the final portions of the 100 year old birthday celebration which the Baptist Church has been taking part in.
“It’s pretty well complete,” said Hipps. “This has pretty much been the climax to it.”
