Mesalands Community College will hold its second annual Hispanic Scholarship Fundraiser on Friday at 6:30 and MCC president Phillip O. Barry is excited about the evening of visiting, dining and dancing.
“This is an important event,” said Barry. “It plays a very important role in education in the community.” Barry said that all the money raised at the fundraiser goes directly into a fund to help hispanic students cover the costs of their college educations at Mesalands college. “Right now we have two students who are attending college on these scholarships,” said Barry. “I think that shows the value of this fundraiser.”
The two current students, Donna Garcia who works at the MCC book and Stephanie Chacon who works in the IT department, both say the scholarhip which was funded by last year’s fundraiser has been a major help to their being able to get through college. “I was able to work a litle less and work on studies a little bit more,” said Garcia about the scholarhip she received that was raised at the fundraiser. “Now I don’t have to worry about bills quite so much because of the scholarship.”
The fundraiser will be held in the Tucumcari VFW Post 2528 building at 105 E. Main. According to MCC representative John Yearout, at the event there will be a social period for those attending from 6:30 to 7 p.m. with dinner being served at 7 p.m. The dinner will be followed by dancing which will go to midnight. Yearout said music will be provided by a disc jockey.
Tickets are $25 per person and are available at Bobs’ Budget Pharmacy, Mesalands Community College and the college’s Success Center. The meal that will be dined upon will be provided by Lena’s Cafe.
