Five Tucumcari High School golfers will play in the state golf tournament May 10-11 at Riverside Golf Course near Farmington. Nick Wiegel, Brian Lopez, Aaron Peacock, Matt Smith and Larry Roybal qualified at a tournament in Clovis last week.
This past Monday, the golfers prepared for the state competition by playing in the district tournament at Penderais Golf Course near Las Vegas. Wiegel and Lopez tied for fifth in district play with a score of 79. Roybal was right behind them with a score of 80, and Peacock scored a 95. Smith played but was disqualified for filling out a scoring sheet improperly. Rattler coach Charlie Maciel said the state tournament will be quite a challenge.
“We want to win,” said Maciel, “but we will be playing on a course we haven’t had much practice on.” Tucumcari has not been to the state tournament in five years. Maciel said his golfers did what they had to do to have the chance.
“They knew they had to reach their target score at Clovis, and they went out and did it,” he said. “All of the guys have improved over the past several weeks, so we’ll have to see. I think we can at least be in the top five out of a dozen or so teams.”
Maciel’s strategy is to not put any undue pressure on his golfers heading into the state tournament.
“It will be their first time at state,” he said. “I will try to encourage them to relax, enjoy the experience and always remember that golf is a lifetime pursuit.”
