Winston Jim was the only one from Mesalands to make it through the short round at the Stevenville, Texas Intercollegiate Rodeo.
He did it in steer wrestling by taking fourth place out of a field of 50 in the long round and by taking sixth in the short round and having a sixth place average. Other team members that made a good initial showing included bare-back rider Clay Houston who finished ninth in the long round but was unable to compete in the short round because of broken ribs. Bull rider Josh Nunn took fourth place in the long round but could not stay on long enough to score in the short round. Only three riders were able to stay on in the Stevenville short round.
Others making a showing in the long round were Chance Pope (calf roping) who got 16th place out of 90 competitors and Matthew Anton (steer wrestling) who placed 20th. “We got real close to going to Nationals with some of our team members, but didn’t have any qualify this year” said Mesalands Rodeo Coach Danny Garcia. “All we can do now is work to improve and look forward to the fall season.”
Coach Garcia has been signing up new and return rodeo students for the fall semester.
