Four Tucumcari High school athletes will have football on their minds next month. The four football players have been selected to play in the Class A-AA North-South All-Star game to be played June 12 at 5:30 p.m. in Silver City.
A.J. Molinas, Andy Lau, Rob McClelland and Abel Vargas each made the North team and will be traveling to Silver City June 8 to begin practice for the big game.
Rattler Head Coach Dub Smith said the players are honored. “It is really an honor that they were selected,” said Smith. “We started sending players to the all-star games in 1999, and each year the all-star coaches tell me how much they respected the Tucumcari players’ behavior on and off the field.”
Molinas might be kicking the ball for the North squad as he was selected first team all-state for his kicking abilities. Vargas was an all-district linebacker. Lau was a first team all-state split end and McClelland, a running back was selected despite having only played in five games due to an injury. Coach Smith noted that members of the Tucumcari Elks Lodge are paying for the athletes’ travel to Silver City as they have done in years past.
