Former Tucumcari area District Attorney Victor C. Breen was chosen by the National District Attorneys Association Executive Committee as one of the five individuals’ names to be placed on the Prosecutors Memorial at the Ernest F. Hollings National Advocacy Center in Columbia, S.C. The memorial honors prosecutors killed in the line of duty.
Breen, district attorney of the 10th Judicial District of New Mexico (which includes Tucumcari), was shot to death Dec. 1, 1971 while getting into his car to drive to work. His assailant, Jose Resendo Garcia, was ruled insane and never brought to trial. Jose Garcia was a former mental patient who had been committed to the New Mexico Mental Hospital by DA Breen and later released. At the time of the shooting, Breen was considering having Garcia recommitted.
Tentative plans are to dedicate the memorial in September, during the annual NDAA Fall Conference.
