A special election for the District 3 city commissioner will be held Tuesday, July 13.
The election will have three individuals — James Witcher, Ron Wilmot, and Paula Chacon — vying for the commission seat left vacant with the death of Mayor Calvin Litchfield during the winter. The July 13 election date was the first available date following the originally scheduled Tucumcari city election in March. By state rules, the commission could have chosen a temporary replacement until the special election, but the four commissioners were unable to agree on a single person for the commission seat.
According to Tucumcari City Administrator Clara Rey, the only polling place for the election will be at Tucumcari High School and the polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Current Mayor Antonio Apodaca said he was happy that someone would be stepping into the District 3 seat before too long. “I for one am looking forward to that seat being filled,” said the Mayor.
