When the Alumni gather for the Rattler Reunion Banquet Saturday evening, Aug. 7, they will be entertained by musician and impressionist Damon Whaley of Dalhart, Texas.
“I’m really looking forward to being in Tucumcari this weekend,” said Whaley about performing at the Rattler Reunion on Friday and Saturday. “For one thing, I’ve never ridden on a float in a parade before.” Whaley said he will be riding on the 50 year float and will have his piano hooked up so he can be playing some different musical pieces as he travels down the Boulevard. “It will be a first for me, that’s for sure.” said Whaley.
Ridding on a float in the Rattler Reunion will only be one of the activities that Whaley will be taking part in over the Rattler Reunion weekend. He will also be performing at the 50-year luncheon on Friday for the class of 1954. In addition he will be the headliner for the Reunion Banquet Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The 22-year-old Whaley said his 45 minute routine, which he has honed over three years as a professional entertainer, consists basically of four different aspects. He plays the piano, sings, does some comedy and impressions. “My audiences seem to enjoy it,” said Whaley.
Whaley said that a good portion of his performance features him performing as Floyd Cramer and Jerry Lee Lewis. He added however, that he intersperses bits of Louis Armstrong and impressions of Jimmy Stewart, Bill Clinton, Sean Connery, Kermit the Frog and other famous personalities.
Vernice Day of the class of 1954 said that she has caught Whaley’s performance and was entertained. “I enjoyed it a great deal,” said Day. Whaley has released a compact disc entitled “Cruisin’ on Route 88” on which he does songs, piano instrumentals, comedy routines and voices.
