The Tucumcari High School football team traveled 300 miles to soundly defeat the Crownpoint Eagles 42-8 Friday night.
All-State running back Eric Holt scored five touchdowns for the game and ran for more than 100 yards in the first quarter alone. The Rattler defense dominated except for giving up one touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Except for the lone eagle touchdown, Crownpoint never had decent field position.
Holt scored on a 64-yard touchdown run early in the game and a six-yard score and a seven-yard score soon after. Quarterback Chris McCasland connected with Holt for a 64-yard touchdown pass right before the end of the first half.
Holt was not finished. He intercepted a pass for a 55-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter to put the Rattlers up 42-0. Holt and McCasland each ran for two-point conversions.
In their previous game against Mora, the Rattlers lost intensity in the second half, but Friday night they scored twice in the second half while allowing only one Crownpoint score. The Crownpoint score came after a 65-yard run by the Eagle quarterback.
That was the only score the Rattlers allowed their opponent.
Tucucmari plays at Estancia next Friday night at 7 p.m.
