It was a loss for the Tucumcari Rattler Volleyball Team Tuesday evening at the Tucumcari Elementary School Gymnasium as they played Elida, but it was one that was heartening for both the coach and the Rattler team with the scores of 23-25, 17-25, 25-23, 19-25.
“We had moments that we were excellent,” said Rattler Volleyball Coach Alicia Trujillo. “Then we would turn around and make five mental mistakes. But I saw a lot of things that we were doing right. I just need to see them more often.”
Trujillo was especially impressed with her girls’ ability to come back from a two game deficit and then win a game with confidence. “They knew they could do it,” said Trujillo, “and they did. A few days ago I don’t know that they could do that. They’re improving with each match.”
Trujillo said that she felt the way her team played their last two games that if there had been one more game, she felt that the Rattler girls could have won that one also.
“I’m seeing a lot of improvement,” said Trujillo.
In the first two games that the Rattlers lost, they started out with Elida having solid leads. In the final game it was much the same. However, in the game Tucumcari won, it was the Rattlers who took a lead refusing to give it up to Elida.
In fact in the final contest, the Tucumcari Squad three times made up the Elida lead only to see it slip away each time.
The Elida Coach Darrell Chenault said that Tucumcari plays well and he was “just happy we got out of here with a win.”
He said one of his best girls was out because she was showing at the state fair and because of that he had been unsure of a win coming in to Tucumcari.
