The Tucumcari High School football team takes on Raton this Friday night at Rattler Stadium, 7 p.m., and if last year is any indication, Tucumcari will be victorious.
Last season, Tucumcari beat Raton 40-20. Raton is 2-1 so far this season with victories over Bernalillo and Taos. Their only loss has been to Portales. Tucumcari is 3-0. Raton Coach Brock Walton expects a tough game at Tucumcari.
“Tucumcari always does well no matter who their opponent is,” said Walton. “Their coaching staff always does a terrific job.”
Walton said he has watched a film of the Rattlers playing this season. “I thought they (the Rattlers) looked phenomenal. They have terriffic team speed.”
Walton said his team’s defense is formidable. “Our defense is probably our main strength. We’ve caused 12 turnovers so far this year,” he said.
The Raton defense will need to play at its best. Tucumcari has put more than 40 points on the board in each of its three games this season. Homecoming will actually be celebrated next weekend against the New Mexico Military Institute.
