According to Mesalands Community College Public Information Director John Yearout, 50 students are participating this year with the Mesalands Rodeo Team.
Yearout said the 50 athletes come both from all over the state and across the country. Not only do they hail from towns throughout New Mexico, he said they also come from Texas, Colorado, and as far away as Michigan.
Yearout said the numbers and quality of competitors are a pleasant addition to the team and are a pleasing factor for rodeo coach Danny Garcia. “We have some real good talent this year with some of the returning students and the new ones. We look good, especially in steer wrestling, calf roping and team roping,” said Garcia.
Season opener for the rodeo squad for this year is at Eastern New Mexico University at Portales on September 17, 18 and 19. Team members will accumulate points at each event in order to qualify to go to the Intercollegiate Rodeo Finals held in Casper, Wyoming next spring.
Rodeo is the only intercollegiate sport in which Mesalands competes.
