SANTA ROSA – For the first time in what one observer said was “longer than most people can remember,” the Tucumcari volleyball team has won a district volleyball match.
What makes the Thursday win especially pleasant for Tucumcari head coach Alicia Trujillo was that the win came at the expense of Tucumcari’s arch rival Santa Rosa, 25-20, 15-25, 25-21, 25-19.
“This was a very good win,” said Trujillo. “A district win always is good and to beat Santa Rosa is great.”
The win was especially pleasant for the Tucumcari squad because the weekend before, Santa Rosa placed third in the Melrose Invitational Volleyball Tournament while Tucumcari did not finish among the top five places.
“Our girls played really well,” said Trujillo. “Jamie (Jones) best game so far. She had at least 15 blocks. But everybody played well. Autumn Moore had a really good game. And Nikki Newman played really well, and Amanda Tapia and..well everybody had a good game.”
Trujillo said what it came down to was that Santa Rosa proved to be the place where everything came together for the Tucumcari team. The Tucumcari coach pointed to the serving, the digs, the blocks and the kills administered by the Tucumcari girls in the win as proof of the quality of the Rattler’s squad’s play. “We just played really well,” said Trujillo about the contest.
The win puts the Rattlers at 1-1 in district play which will continue Tuesday, Oct. 12 against volleyball power Texico which will be played at Texico. “They are a tough team,” said Trujillo, “but we can beat them if our girls play like they did against Santa Rosa.”
