Trucking jobs come to Tucumcari

Interstate Distributor Company, a Tacoma-based trucking firm, is currently installing a working terminal in the 1600 block of Camino Del Coronado on the west side of town.
George Payne, executive vice president of the company, said the company hopes to hire many new drivers from the Tucumcari area.

“We hope to hire as many new drivers as we possibly can,” said Payne. “It should be a win-win situation for Tucumcari and our company. We can provide jobs and fulfill our drivers’ needs.” Company officials said one key element in the decision to place a terminal in Tucumcari was due to Tucumcari’s access to the midwest and the west, especially California.
Interstate Distributor Co., with more than 3,000 employees, has been in business nearly 80 years and has terminals all over the U.S. Randy McMellon, a manager for the company, was busy installing offices at the site of the Tucumcari terminal Tuesday. “We hope to have trucks running in and out of Tucumcari shortly after the installation of our fuel system,” said McMellon. “Hopefully that will happen around the beginning of the year.”

McMellon said showers, televisions and a break lounge will be available to drivers at the Tucumcari terminal.
Ruth Nelson, a staff member for the Greater Tucumcari Economic Development Corporation, said the development corporation’s board members helped facilitate Interstate’s decision to locate in Tucumcari. “Our board members served as liaisons between the property owners and Interstate Distributor Company,” said Nelson. “We are very excited about Interstate coming to town.” Payne said his company welcomes inquiries from prospective drivers in the Tucumcari area. The company has a toll-free number, 1-800-DRIVE-4-US.
