Due to budget constraints, The New Mexico Department of Labor has cut office hours at the Tucumcari One Stop Career Center at 421 West Route 66 Boulevard. The office, which had previously been open Monday through Friday, is now open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only.
The office offers free employment services to Quay County residents.
Bill Griffin, the Employment Representative Supervisor at the office, said he has been assigned to the Santa Rosa office on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“We are still open in Tucumcari Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a break from noon to 1 p.m.,” said Griffin. “Of course I’m the only labor department employee in the office now.”
Griffin said more job seekers are stopping by on days the Tucumcari office is open.
“I still have no problem helping the people who come in,” said Griffin. “It’s just that this time of the year is traditionally the time when construction slows down, so there are more people looking for work.”
Griffin said he routinely finds work for Tucumcari residents all over the state of New Mexico.
“I’ve been getting the word out that I’ll be in Santa Rosa two days a week,” he said. “I’ve let all my current clients know about the new hours in Tucumcari.”
