The Tucumcari High School boys and girls basketball teams held intra-squad scrimmages Monday evening at the Tucumcari Elementary School gym. Boys’ coach John Span said he liked the energy level of his players while girls coach Alicia Trujillo said her players need more work.
Hustle is the name of the game for the 2004-2005 Rattlers. During Monday’s scrimmage a host of players looked confident sprinting down the floor on offense and defense. Coach Span liked the effort. “If their energy remains this good we’re going to be allright,” said Span.
The Rattlers host Elida Monday evening.
Tucumcari has some players from last season that still have a knack for scoring. Chris McCasland and Nemi Salvador displayed their usual talent. Salvador stole the ball once at mid court and raced for an easy layup. Rattler fans will remember him doing that last season in many games. McCasland hit some trademark threes. Coach Span mentioned two other players who are coming on strong as the season begins. “Justin Benavidez has shown me some good stuff. Jeremy Lopez made some good decisions at guard,” said Span. “We needed somebody like him to direct the team.”
Another player with good court instincts is Gabriel Montano. He has the ability to push the ball down the court quickly in heavy traffic. Montano also shot the three. Matt Braziel showed his ability to hit the three as well.
Drew White showed he can shoot well close to the basket.
“Drew is not afraid to shoot down low,” said Span. “What he needs to learn is when to kick the ball outside and when to shoot.”
Coach Alicia Trujillo saw some good things from certain players in Monday’s scrimmage, but seemed disappointed with the flow of the scrimmage. “We were out of control,” said Trujillo. “We have a lot of work to do.” Trujillo said she was impressed with sophomore T’Shawna Span’s play, but said she needs to learn self-control.. “She showed some good things but she can’t help us if she’s on the bench with foul trouble.”
Span stole the ball twice in a row in the scrimmage and dribbled down court for layups off those steals.
Trujillo seemed to indicate her starting lineup for the Elida game Monday may look similar to last year’s starting lineup.
“We’ll have Jamie Jones, Nikki Newman, Amanda Tapia and Whitney Spinks back,” she said. Also we have Shay Rigdon and Jana Kirsksey returning.” The Lady Rattlers have a few more players with a little more size this season.
“Players like Andrea Garcia, Margarita Romero, Reyna Banuelos and Audrey Martinez can each give our post-up player Jamie Jones a rest,” said Trujillo. “And don’t forget Jana Kirksey.”
