Tucumcari Fire Chief Mike Cherry said Friday that the holidays are a wonderful time but he added that they can also be dangerous because of the extra threats of fires during the holiday season.
“We don’t want to frighten people,” said Cherry, “but the Christmas trees and for that matter the season in general can be a time of fires if people are not careful and that can put a very big damper on holiday spirits.”
To combat the dangers Cherry put together a 12 point list of dangers related to Christmas trees and the season in general.
•Choose a fresh Christmas Tree.
•Place the tree well away from heat sources.
•Keep water in the tree stand reservoir.
•Never use Candles to decorate Christmas trees.
•When decorating with lights, be sure to purchase only those labeled by a testing laboratory.
•Check for frayed or damaged cords and replace if found.
•Don’t Overload electrical outlets.
•Always unplug all lights before leaving home or going to sleep.
•Be sure lights are kept well away from decorations and other combustible materials.
•Keep lit candles away from children.
•For outside decorations, use only those lights labeled for outside use.
