Eleven players from the Tucumcari High School football team received District 2AA All-District honors recently voted by district coaches other than their own. “Some of the other district coaches said that if our team had been healthy this year, we would have played for the state championship,” said Smith. “These young men are tremendous examples of players who had good coaches and worked really hard.”

Senior Chris McCasland was first-team free safety and punter and second-team quarterback. Senior Matt Braziel was first-team wide receiver and second-team cornerback. Senior Justin Garcia was first-team offensive lineman and second-team defensive linemen. McCasland said the all-district awards won’t make up for his team not making it to the playoffs this year. “Our whole team worked hard, “ said McCasland. “The all-district status will help me out with trying to play college ball though..”

“Years from now I will be able to look back and say that we were pretty successful,” said Braziel. “It’s exciting to be named all-district,” said Garcia. “I played hard this season.”

Eric Holt made first-team running back and second-team linebacker. “I just tried to work hard and be a role model for the team,” said Holt.

Steven Taylor made first-team linebacker and second-team tight end. Brian Lopez made first-team defensive lineman and second-team offensive lineman.

“Making all-district shows that I hustled and ran to the ball and made tackles, “ said Taylor. “I’m happy I excelled at something,” said Lopez. “You should always try to find something in which you can do your best.” Drew White made first-team offensive lineman and second-team defensive lineman. “I lifted weights and worked on my quickness this season,” said White. D.J. Martinez made second-team running back.
“It was hard to play behind Eric Holt, but I felt better as the season went on because Eric helped me out a lot,” said Martinez.

Nathan McDonald made honorable mention for running back and defensive end. Anas Badshah made honorable mention for kicker. “The first game I was really nervous kicking extra points, but I did well, so I became less nervous as the season went on,” said Badshah. “I will work harder to make first-team next year,” said McDonald.
Adrian Jones was a first-team cornerback. He was unavailable for comment.
