The San Jon and Tucumcari High School girls basketball teams traded turnovers throughout their game Friday evening at San Jon, but the Lady Rattlers came out with a 40-35 victory.
The Lady Rattlers found ways to get Jamie Jones the ball down low as Jones finished with 12 points. Sam Montano fed Jones the ball on several scoring plays.
Jones, usually known as Tucumcari’s best scorer, was outscored Friday night by teammate Whitney Spinks. Spinks scored most of her 13 points in the third quarter as she hit for eight straight points to give Tucumcari a 28-21 lead. Spinks hit several of those shots off rebounds, even managing to steal the ball once during her scoring spree.
In the fourth quarter with Tucumcari up by a slim eight, Amanda Tapia hit two shots in a row to put her team up by 12. The Lady Rattlers then had the confidence to finish well. San Jon closed the gap towards the end by hitting some free throws on desperation fouls.
For San Jon, JaTawn Slutz showed why she is the go-to-girl for the Lady Coyotes. Slutz scored a game-high 19 points.
Nikole Martinez was next in San Jon scoring with six points. The Lady Coyotes had trouble with Tucumcari’s full-court press throughout the game. The Lady Rattlers may have learned that a good defense leads to scoring opportunities.
San Jon led Tucumcari shortly before halftime, but Jamie Jones scored on a three-point play to tie the game. The Lady Rattlers let San Jon score only three points in the third quarter.
Whitney Spinks must have taken her vitamins at halftime because she took control midway through the third quarter to give the Lady Rattlers the consistent scoring they needed to pull ahead and win their first game of the season.
